Transportation
1. Transportation as a Medicaid service |
-
Medicaid
now reimburses transportation to health services.
-
Consumer Choices Option in HCBS waivers allows the purchase of transportation
services to ensure community participation for work, recreation, and
social reasons.
-
A newly
developed program focusing on aging drivers and their physicians
helps the older driver remain a safe driver, and provides
information to caregivers about indicators of dementia.

2. Consumer-responsive
transportation services |
-
Self-direction allows the use
of natural supports for
transportation.
-
Iowa's
2005 Real Choices Systems Transformation grant will establish
statewide transportation brokerage service.
-
All new
fixed-route transit buses must meet ADA accessibility standards.
-
Some
vehicles have been retrofitted for wheelchair access, which results
in 100% fixed-route accessibility.
-
Private
inter-city bus companies were given financial and technical
assistance to acquire new ADA accessible over-the-road buses.
-
The
legislature, recognizing that “efficiency” is not the primary
purpose of accessible transportation, passed a new formula for
allocating transit funds to make funding more feasible for
para-transit services. The new formula is based on 50% actual
service delivery (number of riders and mileage with number of
routes) plus 20% efficiency and 30% local funding match.
-
IDOT has
contracted for the installation of technology at Iowa transit
agencies to enhance coordination of transportation services, improve
access for people with disabilities and for older Iowans, and
strengthen accountability for human service organizations that pay
for transportation.
-
Under a
grant from the Federal Transit Administration transportation
reauthorization legislation, IDOT began a statewide community
planning effort in 2006; local stakeholders and consumers will be
able to provide input on local transportation needs at regional
workshops, explore opportunities for collaboration, and make
recommendations for statewide planning.
