Life in Prison
Breaking the Mold

"Policy" may seem abstract, but it has concrete effects on the lives of real people, real Iowans, as you will see in this video, Life in Prison: Breaking the Mold.

In 1999, the US Supreme Court d Decision affirmed that people who use long term supports should get them in the least restrictive environment that can meet their needs.

Olmstead vindicated the struggle of Iowans advocating for home and community based services, an end to our over-dependence on institutional care, and self-determination for people with disabilities and for older Iowans.

You might expect this video to be about corrections, but it isn't. It's about a young man with disabilities. His story makes it clear that our state policy makers still have much work to do as they apply the principles of Olmstead to the redesign of our human services system.
